NENYOS Piping Rock Orchids Open House & Picnic (02 Jun 2012)

New England societies have been extended an invite to the NENYOS Piping Rock Orchids Open House and Picnic in Galway, NY. We think this is a great opportunity to meet orchid lovers from outside our area, hear some great speakers and spend a summer day among beautiful orchids (and maybe bring a few home with you).

Darrin Norton (Speaker & Plant Sales: Mountain Orchids)

MOS is organizing a bus trip to the event. Cost for the trip is $40/person and includes bus fare to and from Galway, a light breakfast on the bus, and a donation to NENYOS for lunch.

Monthly meeting starts at 7 p.m., one-half hour earlier than our usual meeting for this special auction. Plants for the Show Table need to be registered by 6:30 p,m.

Harry Kubrick was a longtime member of the Massachusetts Orchid Society. We are fortunate to be able to auction his collection of over 200 orchids of primarily Paphs, Phrags, Catts and Dendrobiums.

MOS Picnic & BBQ (23 Jun 2012)

Bob Richter has once again been kind enough to open his home for our annual picnic. Join us for a barbeque and potluck lunch and explore Bob's beautiful greenhouse filled with thousands of orchids.

The MOS will provide drinks, hot dogs, and hamburgers. Please RSVP by Saturday, June 16th so we know how much food to buy. Look for an Evite in your mailbox. If you do not receive one, please RSVP to sasha@massorchid.org

Please note: To give our grill masters time to enjoy the event, the grill will run from 1pm-2pm.

Monthly meeting starts at 7:30 p.m.

Peter Lin, owner of Big Leaf Orchids, will speak about novelty Phalaenopsis.

Peter started growing orchids over 30 years ago, and turned his orchid growing into hybridizing. He started the company Big Leaf Orchids in 1996, a family owned operation in Southlake, Texas that specializes in Phalaenopsis orchids. Peter takes annual trip to Taiwan to personally see the latest Phalaenopsis development, and to hand select new varieties to add to his hybridizing and for his customers. Peter specialize in growing Phalaenopsis because their flowers are long lasting, 2 to 3 months indoor and longer in a temperature-controlled greenhouse. Peter has received numerous AOS awards. His other interest in orchids include Vanda, Cattleya, and Paphipedilum.
