Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month at the Sons of Italy Winchester, 117 Swanton Street, Winchester, MA. Meetings begin at 7:30 pm, but many members show up about about 7 pm to grab a cup of coffee, socialize and set up their plants on the show table.

Guests are always welcome!

    This is a publicly-open Judging session of the AOS Northeast Regional Center at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston MA.

    Start time is 10:30 for announcements, 11 AM for presentations or discussions, lunch at noon, and judging commencing around 1 PM. Please note that all plant entries should arrive no later than noon.

    The CT State Museum of Natural History in association with the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (EEB) will be hosting a special orchid event on Saturday, April 6th on the UConn campus in Storrs, CT. Celebrate rare orchids in bloom with two unique talks, world-class experts, and tours of the EEB Greenhouses.

    Morning Tea with Charles Darwin— Almost Mad About the Wealth of Orchids

    11:00 am – 12:00 noon

    UConn Professor Kenneth Noll portrays history’s most famous biologist and naturalist, Charles Darwin. Charles Darwin’s 1862 book Fertilisation of Orchids explores natural theology and the relationship between insects and plants that resulted in their beautiful and complex forms. Tea and scones will be served.

    Understanding Orchids with Renowned Author William Cullina

    William Cullina, Director of Horticulture and Plant Curator, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Boothbay, ME

    Orchids are the most diverse, mysterious, and exotic plants in the world. Their popularity as houseplants has surged in recent years as advances in nursery production have made them inexpensive and widely available. Drawing from his award-winning Understanding Orchids, Bill will explore the fascinating, challenging, and deeply rewarding world of orchids. You will never see them the same way again!

    Between Talks Visit the EEB Greenhouses

    The greenhouses hold the broadest collection of global plant diversity in the Northeast—including over 200 species of orchids, many of which are not commonly grown. Staff will be on hand to guide visitors.

    This event is FREE and open to the public.

    Steven A Frowine is a Professional Horticulturalist, Author and Lecturer. He is the author of Orchids for Dummies, Fragrant Orchids, Gardening Basics, Miniture Orchids and Moth Orchids: A Complete Guide to Phalenopsis. He will be speaking on the easy to grow and intensely satisfying moth orchid. In his talk he will describe new hybrids and classic species. Most importantly Frowine will share his secrets on how to grow these plants to perfection.

    The Lyman Estate's Historic Greenhouses have interesting orchids budded and blooming to add to your collection. Hundreds of orchids for sale, including many hard-to-find varieties. Visit the greenhouses and enjoy gorgeous floral colors, shapes, and scents. Among the many varieties on display and for sale are Cattleyas, Dendrobiums, Phragmipediums, Encyclias, Oncidiums, Zygopetalums, Phalaenopsis and more. 


    Staff are on hand to offer expert advice.


    MOS members receive a 10% discount on purchases at the greenhouses.

    MOS Show Vendor Bob Cleveland will speak on a topic to be announced.

    This month’s talk is entitled “Don’t put on the virus blinders, your collection is depending on you. We are going to look closely at each viral pathogen including symptoms and transmission. We will also talk about sanitation practices, testing options and what to do with test results

    Helen Hersh the owner of Mount Prospect Orchids started her career growing on her windowsill. In her early years she grew AOS winning Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums on her apartment windowsill. Shel’ll be sharing culture tips and which species are best suited to windowsill growers.

    Kim will be speaking on orchids that can be grown outside for six months or more here in New England. Orchids covered include Bletilla, Aussie Dendrobiums, Den- drobium nobile hybrids, reedstem Epidendrums, Laelia anceps & Cymbidium.

    Brandt will teach us how to make more orchids from the ones we have. He’ll be discussing how to tell when an orchid is ready to be divided, how to divide it and how to pot up and care for the divisions. In addition he’ll explain how to achieve success with keikis. Finally he will demonstrate how to deflask and pot up orchid seedlings. Orchid flasks are an exciting way to build a collection of one of a kind orchids.
